Walthamstow Wetlands
UX/UI and front-end development for Walthamstow Wetlands, creating an engaging digital presence for one of London’s largest urban nature reserves.
Introduction
Walthamstow Wetlands is a major nature reserve in the Lea Valley, providing an important habitat for wildlife while offering visitors the opportunity to explore an extensive natural environment within London.
My work on the Walthamstow Wetlands website formed part of my wider engagement with the London Borough of Waltham Forest. The project combined UX/UI and front-end development, with the digital experience needing to communicate the distinctive character of the Wetlands while providing visitors with clear and practical information to help them discover, understand and enjoy the site.
Creating a Digital Experience for a Unique Location
Walthamstow Wetlands presented a very different digital challenge from many of the other Waltham Forest projects. The website needed to communicate the character of the location and encourage people to visit, while also providing the practical information required to plan and enjoy their time there.
Strong imagery and visual presentation were therefore important, but they needed to be supported by clear navigation and well-structured information about the Wetlands, its wildlife, facilities and activities.
Balancing Inspiration and Practical Information
My involvement combined UX/UI and front-end development, helping translate the project’s visual direction and content requirements into a usable digital experience.
The interface needed to appeal to different audiences, from people planning a visit to those interested in wildlife, conservation and the wider story of the Wetlands. This reinforced the importance of understanding the different reasons users may arrive at a website and ensuring that each can find an appropriate route through the content.
Part of the Waltham Forest Digital Programme
Walthamstow Wetlands was one of around 15 websites and digital projects I worked on during my extended engagement with the London Borough of Waltham Forest.
Together with projects such as London Borough of Culture, Marry Me London and Eastern Legal Partnership, it demonstrates the diversity of that work. Each project served a very different purpose and audience, requiring an individual approach while drawing on the same underlying principles of usability, clear communication and effective digital delivery.
