The Daily Telegraph

UX/UI consultancy for one of the UK’s leading news organisations, working within a major digital publishing environment where usability, content and commercial requirements needed to work together.

Introduction

Working with The Daily Telegraph provided the opportunity to apply UX/UI expertise within a large-scale digital publishing environment, where the user experience needed to support a substantial and constantly changing volume of news, features and other editorial content.

My involvement focused on UX/UI work, considering how interface design and user journeys could support both readers and the wider objectives of the digital product. The project added valuable experience of working with a major household-name media organisation, where editorial priorities, usability, technology and commercial requirements all formed part of the digital experience.

Designing for Digital Publishing

A major news website presents particular UX challenges. Readers need to move quickly between breaking news, analysis, features and other content, while the organisation needs to accommodate constantly changing editorial priorities and commercial requirements.

The interface therefore has an important role in establishing hierarchy, helping readers understand what is important and providing clear routes into the considerable volume of content available.

UX/UI Within an Established Digital Product

My work with The Daily Telegraph focused on UX/UI within an existing large-scale digital publishing environment. This meant considering improvements in the context of an established product rather than designing a website in isolation.

Working in this type of environment requires an understanding of how individual design decisions fit into the wider experience. Navigation, content presentation, interaction and consistency all need to support readers without getting in the way of the journalism itself.

Balancing Users, Content and Business Requirements

The project reinforced the importance of balancing different requirements when making UX decisions. A news organisation needs to serve its readers effectively, but its digital products must also support editorial priorities, advertising and other commercial objectives.

Finding solutions that recognise these different needs is an important part of UX consultancy and provided valuable experience that carried forward into subsequent work with other large organisations and complex digital products.
